PSA: Xcolibur commenting broken on LJ

If you're having trouble communicating with someone on LJ, it may be due to a new problem with Xcolibur, an old LJ theme (is that the right word?) that's been officially unsupported for some years but until now has remained functional. Some of us, myself very much included, are clinging to it for all we're worth.

The problem:

1) Xcolibur users are unable to see comments. Most seem unable to see comments on any LJ post. I can't see comments on posts made by Xcolibur users, whether my own or someone else's, but I can see comments on non-Xcolibur user posts.

2) The Profile page menu sub-headers are missing and inactive (i.e., if you mouse over the empty line where they should be, nothing happens).

There are several Support requests opened within the last ~12 hour, all by Xcolibur users.

I'm putting this up both as a PSA and as a way for people to converse with me about this problem, if they like, since that is not possible on LJ at present.

So it's affecting hold-outs still using the old site schemes. I hope Dystopia doesn't self-destruct too. *clings to dystopia*

Weird- I can see both my comments and old comments on your journal- but I also had my paid account lapse for a couple of days and then paid for it so maybe that hit the reset?

I don't even know; I'm at the "things are on top of me" point right now, and have not got the energy to shake LJ until the wrinkles fall out.

I switched from XColibur when they got rid of comment subject lines, and switched to a style that still had them, but it's never been as good. XColibur will always be what I think LJ should look like.

Good luck keeping it! *waves supportive pompoms*

I'm still too much of an online noobie (got on in 2011) to know all the tech lingo. I don't even know the diff between an Xcolibur user and a non-Xcolibur user, but I have been following friends' dismay with dismay of my own at WTF is going on with LJ.

Remember when there used to be a thing called the "learning curve," back before a change was so unexpected and so drastic that prior knowledge isn't applicable to present circumstances.? *grumbles*

I hate to be a wet blanket, but XColibur hasn't been supported for years. I can't find the official announcement, but one of the design team said in 2008 that it hadn't been supported in years at that point...

Not supported means that if it's broken, LJ most probably isn't going to try to fix it.

I only mention it because at least one of the support requests I saw in the queue was a very demanding FIX IT NOW kinda thing, which made me suspect that people aren't thinking through what not supported means.

Which I know sucks if you're using a thing and it works perfectly well for you, and the company decides it's too old or outdated or whatever and decides not to support it anymore...I'm still using Windows XP, myself, so I get it.

But, maybe it's time to look at alternatives.
