Apologies for the long disappearance.

I was house- and dog-sitting for my local BFF for a couple of weeks and, for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture (mostly technical), was mostly offline for the duration. Also massively sleep-deprived and in over-generous amounts of pain, but that always happens when I'm there, and I don't mind all that much because A) best friend and B) Indy Anna Jane whom I love like breathing.

Anyway, I no sooner got back home and started to get caught up on sleep than my referral to an ENT specialist went through and instead of waiting for weeks to be seen, they had a cancellation and I got in the next day. Yes, I have a deviated septum, and yes, I'm a good candidate for surgery, how would I like a septoplasty and how's a week from today? Head-spinningly fast, actually, but okay, let's do it. So it's all been paperwork and phone calls and pre-surgical EKG and blood tests, with a giant economy size helping of lost sleep fretting over how I'm going to pay for my 20 percent of the cost. It'll be done at the local Catholic hospital which I think has some financial aid options, but there's no certainty I'll qualify; pursuing that is Monday's task.

In the mean time, this means I'm off Aleve (naproxen) as of last Thursday and putting up with a week of seriously increased physical pain plus an ugly, persistent NSAID-withdrawal headache. Take away my primary pain med and add some bonus pain besides... oh, the irony. But it's only for a week, so I'll get through it. I have Vicodin that I can use to take the edge off it for occasional relief, but I hate the stuff, so I only resort to half a pill when I really need a break.

In the other mean time, I'm incredibly frustrated that I'm too distracted by pain and all this other nonsense to properly wallow in the due South/C6D Big Bang which has gone live (whoohoo! \o/). I am very much looking forward to soaking up all the goodness and showering appreciation on the creators once I have all my faculties back again, presumably not too many days after surgery.

In the other other mean time, I'm distracting myself from the less pleasant aspects of reality by catching up on some backlogged DVR viewing. NCIS is so easy to watch; I've been following it since the very beginning and it will doubtless keep making me happy in its uncomplicated way as long as it's on the air. I don't even mind the new female character, and I am delighted that she is married and therefore not a potential love interest for anyone. Given time, I will probably come to love her just as much as I do the rest of the regulars. <3

Next will come Castle and Bones and Chicago Fire, none of which require me to take them too seriously, which is just what I need at the moment.

I did watch the first episode of Gotham. It probably wouldn't be my thing if it weren't for the cast, which is absolutely outstanding, and the visual aesthetic which pings my brain in very pleasing ways. And of course I'm a sucker a main character who strives to do the right thing even when it's difficult and complicated (Rupert Giles, Benton Fraser, et al), so that's also got a shot at hooking me. I'll stay with it for a while, at least.

I also watched the first episode of Gracepoint, which looks like it could be quite good but awfully grim. David Tennant is as charismatic and compelling as ever, though hearing him speak with an American accent is just weird. Also, the setting is supposed to be pretty much exactly where I live -- the north coast of California, between the Bay Area and the Oregon border. Yep, that's me, right there on the spot. They may be aiming to mimic Fort Bragg or a less touristy Mendocino rather than Eureka and environs, but that's handwavey; I'm basically sitting in the real version of their fictional location. And because, of course, they didn't film it here, the show doesn't look like here. It's full of waaaaay too many deciduous trees -- up here, it's all vast swaths of Douglas fir and redwoods with some cedars for variety, and the occasional madrone or live oak -- and there are no "sea stacks" off the coast. As for the ubiquitous ridge of coastal hills, it's just plain missing. So my brain keeps doing a failure-to-compute disconnect that distracts me from the story. Even so, I'll probably keep going for at least a couple more eps.

ETA: Second episode pinpointed the exact location beyond any doubt -- it's a fictionalized version of Shelter Cove.

If I missed anything important in your life -- and I know I missed major happenings in at least one case; e-mail to follow -- it would be lovely if you'd care to fill me in a bit or link me to anything I ought to see.
