2025/111: Return to the Enchanted Island — Johary Ravaloson (translated by Allison M. Charette)
He got sent to a cell... went before the judge, did three months of community service at the Garches hospital, was all the same spared extradition—a random impulse would never extinguish his luck.[p. 96]

Translated from the French, this novel is the first I have read by a Malagasy author. It interweaves Malagasy heritage and history with the story of Ietsy Razak, privileged son of a wealthy family, named after the 'first man' in Malagasy myth. Read more... )

I kinda wanna puke!!!

I've spent the past two days packing. This evening it hit me for real: on Tuesday night I will go to sleep with nothing save for a bag packed for the upcoming road trip once all my belongings have been loaded onto a truck, and on Wednesday I am going to leave this house. Between the time I leave it, and the time I arrive in Wisconsin, I will temporarily not have a home.

And then I'm leaving California. And my new home will be in Wisconsin.

It's true that I've spent the last couple of months trying to visit all my favorite places, see my friends, eat at all my favorite food places, ect. It's also true that this past Friday was my final day at my job. But it's only this evening really, truly sunk in.

I'm going to relocate to the Midwest. I'm going to leave behind everything I have ever known for a) love, and b) financial necessity. I don't know when, or even if, I'll return. Of course the goal is to move back to California in the not-too-distant future, but you just never know what's going to happen, you know?

I can't believe that there was a time I was writing about Blair here in this journal, wistful, sad, full of yearning, because we were not together and I did not think we ever would be. Now I'm about to move in with her.

The cousins and their nephews were supposed to be gone until Tuesday, but they came back today, two days early. This is annoying, because now there will be seven people in the house again, while I'm trying to pack and maneuver boxes downstairs to line them up neatly for the movers. I will have to battle for a spot in the bathroom whenever I need to use it, will likely have to wait god knows how long to shower once I'm finished packing and am drenched in sweat. At least I already got my laundry done, which is great, because ain't no WAY I would be able to battle for the washer and dryer before moving day now that the house is full again.

I also discovered that all my groceries have been eaten again, which left me fuming, but it is what it is at this point and I'm moving in two days anyway.

I can't wait to live some place... quiet. Only myself and Blair to worry about.

There's a long road ahead, yet. But at least from here on out, every day is sure to be interesting.

Mitji—Let's Eat: Mi'kmaq Recipes from Sikniktuk by Margaret Augustine and Lauren Beck, copyright held by the Elsipogto First Nation, is a 2024 collection of recipes and foodways from the Sikniktuk region of what's colonially known as New Brunswick in Canada.

Normally, a cookbook wouldn't be something I read cover to cover, but this book takes a storytelling approach and has features on community members and information on Mi'kmaq foodways throughout it. The recipes are a mix of nostalgic for me (a lot of it similar to my grandmother's cooking) and brand new (rooted in ingredients or preparations specific to the region). They're all straightforward to prepare, and while some feature country meat that not everyone might have access to, the usual substitutions are easy to make.

Like the last book I read, this is divided into sections by season. If you're in spitting distance on the east coast of North America, this should feature some relevant in-season recipes. If you're not, there are still a lot of recipes based around staples available in many parts of the world—or they might just provide a glimpse into food traditions interestingly different from your own.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 21, 2025 is:

hubris • \HYOO-bris\  • noun

Hubris is a formal and literary word that refers to a great or foolish amount of pride or confidence.

// The project's failure was predictable, given the inexperience and unbridled hubris of those leading the effort.

See the entry >

Examples:

"The film was billed to me as an attempt to capture the real power and bumbling hubris of a bunch of arrogant and wealthy men ... who try to rewire the world and find themselves in way over their heads." — Charlie Warzel, The Atlantic, 30 May 2025

Did you know?

English picked up both the concept of hubris and the term for that particular brand of cockiness from the ancient Greeks, who considered hubris a dangerous character flaw capable of provoking the wrath of the gods. In classical Greek tragedy, hubris was often a fatal shortcoming that brought about the fall of the tragic hero. Typically, overconfidence led the hero to attempt to overstep the boundaries of human limitations and assume a godlike status; in response, the gods inevitably humbled the offender with a sharp reminder of human mortality. Take, for example, the story of Phaethon, a mortal son of the sun god Helios. In his hubris, Phaethon drives his father's sun chariot into the heavens but loses control of its horses. The chariot begins to scorch the earth, and Zeus strikes Phaethon down with a thunderbolt.

Last Monday, we went up to Lair o' the Bear, which is another of the county parks. I always like this one, though since it's one of the closer ones, sometimes it can be a bit crowded. Our day got off to a slightly later start than we'd wanted, but it worked out, because there weren't too many people by the time we got there.

I'm splitting this one into two posts, too. Most of the pictures will be on this post, but I'll do a second one of the current graffiti in one of the tunnels. Too many pictures, as always!

I really like this one of Bella. Such soft eyes!

A surprisingly cooperative pygmy nuthatch. Not a species I see super often, so that was exciting. (It was a good birding day in general.)

I really liked these flowers. They were so bright.

Eighteen more pictures:
There used to be a sign right by the trailhead, talking about a homestead that used to be there. There are a couple pieces of the foundation that are still out in the field. I do say "used to be," because the sign is completely gone, now. The field is super overgrown, and none of the remains are visible from the lot. I guess they decided that if no one can tell it's there, they don't want to draw attention to it.

I still wandered out through the grass to look. One time there was a neat snake over by the old chimney. No snake this time, though.

The official greeting committee! I think this is a young red-winged blackbird. It was not terribly disturbed by people walking by.

Some nice flowers.

The creek.

Neat old willow tree.

Spittlebug nests!

Bella by the creek.

Bellflowers!

Bella again!

Nice view of the creek.

Alex and Bella. <3 Even Alex was happy enough with this picture. (Minus the light flare... creek must be haunted, it's obviously a ghost.)

A fast-moving section of the creek.

Honeybee on milkweed! :)

And a bumblebee on a sunflower.

A flycatcher of some type... a pewee, I think.

Chickadee!

The trail goes down next to some private property, which includes a rentable... castle. Lol. The first time we saw it it was a bit of a surprise.

A very fairytale-looking bridge, for sure.

We used that as our turnaround point. I was impressed with how well Bella was doing! It wasn't as hot a day, and she got a bunch of wading breaks, but she made it pretty far before she started lagging any.

And finally, a mushroom on a tree! Only a little inappropriate looking, lol.

This was a really pleasant walk, and it was a great day to be out.

The neighborhood is hosting the 18th annual BurgerFest, where you can get burgers made of gator, ostrich, bison, boar, lamb and virtually anything else you want. Gingko is madly obsessed with it, not just for the free smells and opportunities to make chaos, but also for the adoring masses who all want to know what kind of dog she is and remark on how chill she is. That is a ruse; she is a criminal mastermind and is straining to just go apeshit and devour all the display burgers on counters and the plates of fries little kids are pulling behind them in wagons.

It is making both of us wildly overstimulated, though, and I've spent the whole day trying to grab enough time to write down some thoughts on a show I started last night. It's called Our Generation, and I was only going to watch it because the leads are both fantastic — they have fabulously intense, deliriously delightful chemistry both in real life and in their previous project, The Princess Royal. I love a costume drama, but I don't so much care about youth dramas, and I fully expected this one to be sort of sentimental and sloppy, to be honest.

That's my prejudice against the genre. It's — incredibly moving, beautiful and unsparing. Everyone just calls her Cherry. )

It's on Netflix, for those who don't have Viki. I've only seen three episodes, but it's made a huge, strong impression on me. Even if you don't like youth dramas or realistic shows, this one already seems many cuts above. It's also only 24 episodes, versus the usual 40, so it's not as heavy a lift. I will be watching it for a while, probably, and thinking (and hopefully writing) about it for a long time.
