Brief vent

See, it's irritating enough, in SGA fic, if Rodney's dialog spells out his pronunciation of ZPM as "ZedPM" -- especially if US-born characters aren't written as saying "ZeePM" -- but it is NUTS to have [insert name of US military officer here] saying "ZedPM" in dialog! He would not do that! Have him say "ZPM" or, if you absolutely must, "ZeePM," but not ever "ZedPM"! That's wronger than a wrong thing that's very, very wrong! It makes me get the headache from the headdesking! Please do not do this thing!

Okay, I feel better now.

Exactly! Except worse! Because now imagine all the Chicago cops also saying "Leftenant" in dialog. That is what I just read, translated from SGA to dS. Oh, mercy, no.

Wow, I didn't know how much that annoyed me until you pointed it out. This explains the random, free-floating irritation for certain fics I've felt in the past. ZED=Z=no pronunciation when written!

Drives me bonkers even when it's only Rodney, but the one I just read used ZedPM everywhere, even in US characters' dialog, and even in narrative passages -- and it's in John's POV. That took me right around the twist.
