I rode out the Loma Prieta quake back in 1989; it lasted an interminable 15 seconds that felt like a whole minute. I was absolutely certain that I'd never experience a longer one in my lifetime.

The 6.9 quake we just had offshore was longer. It went on so long I actually looked at my watch to start timing it, and it was another 15 seconds beyond that, so we must have hit at least 20, maybe considerably more. When your adrenaline is rocketing, that feels like an eternity.

This is by far the strongest quake we've had since I moved up here about a decade ago. Crazy strong, though I hope we were saved from severe damage since the epicenter was 40 miles offshore (and therefore something like 50 miles from me). I've been through a 6.0 quake here that felt stronger, but was also closer. It'll be tomorrow before any news is available, so I'll just have to hope that everyone in the region came through it okay.

The good news is that there's apparently no tsunami danger.

Daaaaamn, but it's going to take a long time for my heart to stop racing. Let there be no significant aftershocks, please and thank you kindly. *all digits crossed*

Thank you! Me, too. It was hard not to get freaked out when it just kept on going and kept on going and kept on going... gah.

I'm cherishing a mug of Sleepytime Tea now. Hopefully it'll help settle my nerves enough that I'll eventually get to sleep.

Scary! Earthquakes are no joke (speaking as someone who grew up in Christchurch).

Yeah, after living through a few sizable ones, you can never take them lightly, right? *empathy*

We had the usual flurry of aftershocks, but none very strong and they seem to have pretty much quieted down now. Which is a relief.

That's good - the aftershocks in Christchurch just went on and on for months - exhausting! Hope it stays settled for you.

Yeah, we had a few down in the greater San Francisco region, during my years there, that were like that. Things kept rumbling for the longest time. There was one fault line that almost always went off on Fridays; really weird.

I'm glad this one seems to be settling down quickly.

Doesn't stop me from feeling what turn out to be imaginary aftershocks, though. That always happens after a sizable one; very annoying, nerves still on high alert even though the reason for it is gone.

I'm still imagining that I feel aftershocks today, but then I check and nothing has been logged. Always happens after a sizable one -- lizard brain takes a while to get over being freaked. Oy.

Thanks. :-)
