Every year I think I'm done with American Idol. Every year I channel surf in, just for a minute, just to see who this year's judges are and what the show is doing differently. And every year it hooks me all over again. Damn it.

I really do enjoy all three of the current judges, though. Keith Urban will never be anything but sweet and delightful. Jennifer Lopez is kind and helpful to the contestants. Harry Connick Jr is not (at this point in the year) drunk on camera, and therefore is not only extremely knowledgeable but also mostly charming, at least half as funny as he thinks he is, and mostly not (very) annoying. All of them have boatloads of musical knowledge and skill and they're all good at giving useful and specific feedback to the contestants. And it doesn't hurt that they're all ridiculously pretty.

HCJ still needs someone holding his leash to remind him that the show is not about him, and most of all to give him a wee correction when he does things like jocularly teasing -- on camera and immediately before his audition performance starts -- a contestant who has said he has OCD and is working hard to manage it. (Oh, Harry, no.) But mostly, most of the time, I really enjoy him and often appreciate what he has to say, and I'm glad he's there.

And jeepers, his crazy, flirty mancrush on Keith Urban is ramped up even higher than it was last season, and last season it was about a 9.5 on the 10 scale. Harry is handsy! Much with the touchies! Keith sitting on Harry's lap? We saw that in the first episode. Heaven only knows what lies ahead.

I'm really impressed with a number of the contestants this year, too. There are some people who have talent and skill and image and experience performing -- all of it, the whole package -- and astonishingly, a couple of those are 15 or 16 years old. A lot of the usual WGWGs, but certainly not all. Though one of those is a 25-year old Southern fellow who might very well win it all; he happens to be blind, and I love that pretty much the only attention given to his blindness was when he said he never has performance nerves because he can't see the audience. Mercy, he's good, and entirely original. I hope he writes, too, but we don't know that yet.

Anyway, yeah. Sucked right back in. No telling whether I'll make it through the whole season; I sometimes bail if all my favorites get sent home and I no longer have a horse in the race. But we'll see.

Anybody else watching? Thoughts? Keep me company in my mad foolish viewing?

You know, I don't think I have ever seen a full episode of American Idol? I've seen Adam Lambert and Kris Allen clips, but that is it.

It's... not a great show. There are always cringe-worthy elements and a fair bit of eye-roll inducing formulaic crap. But most years there are at least a few contestants who really have something special and I can care about them and root for them and celebrate what they do. And the judges are pretty. So very pretty. Did I mention that they're pretty? *facepalms* It's a guilty pleasure show, but somehow the pleasure mostly overcomes the rest, so I keep coming back.
