I watched the 12 Monkeys pilot, having been tempted by the extended preview that was released a short while ago. The teaser looked promising, but I thought the episode itself was really disappointing. There was way too much stupid.

Okay, it's a pilot, I can forgive a bit of stupid, but when I'm counting idiocies off on my fingers as the episode progresses, there's a real problem.

There's just no excuse for the bone-headed certainty that killing this one dude would solve everything and *poof* the world right when they had nothing but a name to go on, and even that wasn't correct.

And did whatshername, Cassie, even mention that guy Oliver to Cole? He certainly didn't say anything when he got back to 2043 and had his debriefing.

Those were just the most egregious brainfails.

I don't know. Is it worth going back for more? What do you think?

I downloaded it, but was kinda surprised that someone had decided to make a tv show out of it. It was tricky enough to pull off as a movie - and now a tv show? I'm kinda afraid to watch it, because I can't imagine anything but bad coming out of this... /o\

Weirdly, I have never seen the movie. I don't know how I managed to miss it. But I figured I'd be going in with an open mind and no expectations, so I'd give it a shot.

Must say, I'm underwhelmed so far.

Unless I hear a whole load of people singing amazing praises, I'm going to give it a pass and move a rewatch of the movie up the queue.

I've never seen the movie. Just... never got around to it?

Maybe I'd be better off watching it and stopping there.

The movie is *really* good. Definitely worth your time. No idea how they could stretch it out to a mini-series and keep it good. Pacing is important. :)

Picture this: Protagonists, man and woman, are in the lair of the bad guys, surrounded by bad guys pointing guns at them. Dude protagonist sets up a woo-woo-time-paradox thing that will make things go boom in about a minute, and tells bad guys to watch it closely. They watch it. And they keep watching it. And they watch it some more. And they keep on keeping on watching it while Our Hero slings Our Heroine (who is conscious, healthy, and ambulatory) over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes and runs through the bad guys and out the wide open door to make his escape while they keep watching the thingy. Which (finally) goes boom.

I mean... really, show? Really?

That sounds egregiously idiotic. I think I will rewatch the movie, which at least was supposed to have satiric elements.

Weirdly, the io9 review is entirely positive with nary a mention of the numerous instances of idiocy. I find it hard to believe we were watching the same show. Maybe they have a greater tolerance for characters doing stupid things? I'm really surprised; I was not expecting their reaction to be so very different from mine.

Since I didn't care for the movie (I thought it was...OK but wasn't starry-eyed like most people were back when it premiered), the idea of a TV show based on it isn't appealing to me.

Considering that I can't think of many movies-rebooted-as-TV-shows (that were good/watchable) off the top of my head, I'd advise to give it one more episode before writing it off.

TBH, I'm confused as to why would anyone want a TV show based of this movie. After al, I figure TPTB will have to detour from the canon from the get go because the movie is pretty much a self-contained canon. #leasthelpfulcommentever /o\

Apparently it's diverging widely from the movie plot -- which I'm told it would have to do -- in order to create an ongoing story arc.

Yeah, I'm used to pilots not being very good, and giving a show time to find its stride. But counting off the Stupids on my fingers and having to use two hands was not promising.

I think I'll give them one more shot. But probably not more than that.

Okay, I love love loved the movie, and I understand that movies and television shows are different creatures.

But, having watched the entire pilot, I won't be watching the rest. I can't tell if the show is diverging from the ideas in the movie because of differing plot, or because the tv show is stupid. I suspect it's the latter.

I didn't find the characters at all interesting or compelling, and within the first episode they've already changed Cole from a really broken, really interesting person to some kind of super brainiac with magical brain powers or whatever. And that would be the start of a really long rant.

I thought it was interesting that they changed the main character's name from Katheryn to Cassandra - which immediately brought to mind the mythological Cassandra, who could had the gift of prophecy, but the curse of never being believed. Which fit the character perfectly (saw a man disappear, no one believes her, talks about the coming plague) but the didn't do anything with it.
